The Ferrari Special Projects programme (a.k.a. 'Portfolio Coachbuilding Programme') is an extensive personalization program initiated by Ferrari that allows customers the opportunity to commission established Italian design houses such as Pininfarina, ItalDesign, Zagato, Fioravanti and Touring to create one-off redesigns of their automobiles with full factory support and recognition.

The program was conceived in the wake of millionaire stockbroker James Glickenhaus' commissioning of his P4/5 based on a Ferrari Enzo, and Giorgetto Giugiaro's GG50 to celebrate his 50th anniversary in the design business as well as the Sultan of Brunei's massive and legendary collection of one-off Ferrari Supercars and Shooting Brakes amassed in the 90's and Zagato's rebody of the Ferrari 575, the Ferrari 575 GTZ

At the same time there was a general revival of public interest in the old coachbuilding tradition employed by exclusive manufacturer's in the 1920's and 1930's. The vision was to allow wealthy customers the ability to utilize existing Ferrari platforms in order to bring their dream Ferraris to life while at the same time extending full support and recognition from Maranello.

The One-Off programme produces a maximum of three cars per year. No one can buy an invitation to participate in the One-Off programme and Ferrari doesn’t promote it. Creating your own Ferrari can take between 18 and 24 months and includes regular consultations with the engineers and designers at Maranello. Ferrari's commercial director Enrico Galliera: “We have a big problem, which is that we are sold out until 2021. It has to remain something extremely limited. So even though we have a long list of clients, we are trying to cap it. And that’s the problem that we have so far: that we still have a lot of requests that we cannot satisfy. The price depends on which chassis you are using and what kind of project you want, but the price can be around three million euros.”

The following is a list of Special Projects cars that have been made public.

Ferrari also released some specials / limited series, which are not considered to be part of the Special Projects commissioning program. They are also listed for reference.

On September 18 2018 Ferrari announced the new "ICONA" limited edition special series, introducing the Monza SP 1 and Monza SP2.

SPECIAL PROJECTS:

2008 Ferrari SP1

  • Name: Ferrari SP1
  • Year: 2008
  • Commissioned by: Junichiro Hiramatsu
  • Design by: Fioravanti
  • Base car: Ferrari F430
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: est. $3 to $4 million

Fioravanti's first 'Portfolio Special' is based on the F430 and called 'SP1'. This one-off was built for the Japanese collector Junichiro Hiramatsu who is an admirer of Fioravanti's style. He especially liked the F100, an earlier (unauthorized) Ferrari conceptcar by Fioravanti dating back to 1998. Hiramatsu asked Ferrari if they could build him a car like that and so they turned to Fioravanti.

Fioravanti designed the new body, but the car was built and sold by Ferrari.

The body of SP1 (Special Project #1) is almost completely new, except for the greenhouse (A- B- and C-pillars, wind screen and side windows) which is part of the stressed chassis structure. The new body panels are made of carbon fibre. The skirts, roof and rear bumper clearly show the material they're made of. The rear end of the SP1 is a bit higher and the air intakes are shaped by much sharper lines. The tail lights are taken from the 599 GTB. The nose doesn't look very different than the standard F430, because of the stock head lights, but Fioravanti stretched the nose a bit to make it look sleeker and lower. To match the stretched front end, Fioravanti had to apply some mascara and eye shadow around the stock head lights. The wheels are taken from a standard 430 Scuderia and the side mirrors are stock parts as well.

2009 Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta

Ferrari's second Portfolio Programme car is based upon the 599 GTB Fiorano F1 and is given the coachbuild treatment by Pininfarina. Starting point for the open top makeover was the 'Golden Roadster' built in 1968 by Carrozzeria Fantuzzi. Like that car, this one too, will only appear as a one-off, but this time named 'Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta'. 'Aperta' is Italian for 'open'.

American Edward Walson - heir of the man who invented cable television - commissioned this remake of the 'Golden Ferrari'. In line with his father's money making profession, Walson junior got the idea when he saw the 1968 cult flick 'Histoires Extraordinaires' in which the Fantuzzi Ferrari was given a supporting role. "I had always dreamed of designing sports cars, and when I saw this film the decision came of its own accord: one day I would have 'my' Ferrari", says Walson, who took delivery of the car at Fiorano track in Maranello.

Based upon a standard 599 GTB coupe, the P540 Superfast Aperta's chassis construction is strengthened to maintain rigidity after the top removal. According to the official information the increase in weight was kept down to 20 kilograms 'by employing carbon-fibre extensively', meaning the kerb weight of the roadster is 1.710 kg. Wheelbase and track both front and rear remain untouched, while the car's body is slightly longer and lower then its 599 GTB base.

NEW FERRARI SPECIAL PROJECTS ONE-OFF TO DEBUT AT VILLA D'ESTE

Maranello, 19 May 2011 – New York collector and Ferrari enthusiast Peter Kalikow visited the factory to take delivery of his Special Projects Ferrari Superamerica 45, a unique one-off model. Styled internally by Ferrari Design and engineered and built in-house, the car was specified by Mr Kalikow to celebrate 45 years since he first became a Ferrari client and will make its public debut on the 20th of May at the Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza.

The design is bespoke, featuring a carbon-fibre rotating hard-top which incorporates a rear screen. The boot is entirely new to house the roof when open, and is now in carbon-fibre with a design optimised to reduce drag and increase rear downforce.

The rear buttresses are body-coloured, integral with the rear wheelarches, and incorporate rear quarterlights. The side view is further distinguished by double air vents on the front wing. The Ferrari Superamerica 45 also features a specific chromed front grille and special burnished aluminium A-pillars, wing mirrors and door handles.

The Superamerica 45 is finished in an exclusive Blu Antille, a colour that matches another important car in the client's collection – a 1961 400 Superamerica cabriolet nr. 2331SA. The wheels are body-coloured with a contrasting diamond finish to the spokes. The roof and other carbon-fibre elements of the bodywork – front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser – are in a special contrasting darker blue, a theme that is carried over to the cockpit which features dark blue carbon-fibre dash trim and driver zone.

The interior is another area of exquisite personalisation, with a carefully selected combination of Cuoio leather trim and Blu Scuro carbon fibre details and a latest-generation touch-screen infotainment system.

2013 Ferrari SP30 Arya

  • Name: Ferrari SP30 Arya
  • Year: 2013
  • Commissioned by: Cheerag Arya
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari 599 GTO
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: $4,25 million

Commissioned by Indian entrepreneur Cheerag Arya. After insisting he convinced the Italian company to create a unique model for him. Twelve design options were presented, all of them based on the Ferrari 599 GTO. Dissatisfied, Arya pinched elements of each one and set up a proper model, that one certainly cost more than £ 3 million ($4,25 million).

“I’ll keep it in Dubai and take to the Europe every summer. I will not be showing it to the world, is something very personal”, said Arya to Ferrari Magazine.

  • Base car: Ferrari F12 Berlinetta
  • Production run: 3 (red, silver, black)
  • Price: $4.2 million

The F12 TRS is a unique one-off with a red barchetta body based on the F12berlinetta, made for a customer by Ferrari under its Special Projects programme. It made its public debut in Sicily at Ferrari Cavalcade in June 2014. Designed in-house by the Centro Stile Ferrari headed by Flavio Manzoni, it was inspired by the 1957 250 Testa Rossa, reinterpreted in a modern key.[15][16] The Ferrari F12 TRS also took part to the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

In November 2014 a second F12 TRS was spotted testing at Circuito Monteblanco in Spain, painted in black, while the red version was displayed again in January 2015 at the Festival Automobile International in Paris.

The black F12 TRS was seen in again, this time in Rome at the Ferrari Cavalcade in June 2015, now finished in liquid silver and featuring redesigned front bumper, headlights, mirrors and rear diffuser.

The red F12 TRS was spotted again in Corsica in 2016 now featuring the same redesigned body.

In total, only two F12 TRS were built, a red one and a liquid silver one. The two units are both owned by a Ferrari client.

2014 Ferrari SP America

  • Name: Ferrari SP America
  • Year: 2014
  • Commissioned by: Danny Wegman (USA)
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: F12berlinetta
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: est. $3 to $4 million

The Ferrari SP America is a F12berlinetta-based one-off coupé completed in 2014, like the F12 TRS an offspring of Ferrari's Special Projects programme. Obviously based on the F12, the Ferrari F12 SP America features thoroughly updated styling including a new front end with a new bonnet, wheel arches, front bumper and splitter, side skirts, wheels, bootlid spoiler, rear bumper, B-pillars and a new aggressive rear diffuser.

Under the hood, the Ferrari F12 SP America’s 6.3-litre V12 engine likely delivers 740 hp and 509lb-ft of torque, enough for a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.1 seconds with the 200 km/h milestone achieved in 8.5 seconds.

2016 Ferrari SP 275 RW Competizione

  • Name: Ferrari SP 275 RW Competizione
  • Year: 2016
  • Commissioned by: Rick Workman
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari F12/F12tdf
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: est. $3 to $4 million

The Ferrari SP275 RW Competizione is a one-off car inspired by the Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale 1964. It is based on the F12 Berlinetta but features the more potent engine of the F12 tdf.

The “RW” in the title represents the initials of the car’s owner, the Florida dentist Rick Workman. He’s the owner of two previous Special Projects cars: the 599-based P540 Superfast Aperta unveiled in 2009 and the F12-based F60 America unveiled in 2014.

The stance of the SP 275 RW Competizione, especially when moving from the rear three-quarter panel to the rear wheel arch was carefully refined with a slightly wider track to provide a more muscular look. The front features a more traditional Ferrari grille with a prominent yet smoothly integrated power bulge on the hood. The latter is joined by the slim, vertically-stacked headlights. Finally, the car sits on a set of 20-inch forged alloys unique to it.

Visual cues linking the past and present models include the smooth, voluptuous surfacing, ducktail rear spoiler, and the louvres in the front fenders, three-quarter panels and rear bumper. A final nod to the past is the milled aluminum fuel filler cap.

2018 Ferrari SP3JC

  • Name: Ferrari SP3JC
  • Year: 2018
  • Commissioned by: John Collins, USA
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari F12tdf (chassis & drivetrain)

Presented in November 2018, the SP3JC is a two-off roadster based on the F12tdf chassis. It was designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre to pay homage to Ferrari roadsters of 1950s and 1960s. It is powered by the V12 engine from the F12tdf producing 780 PS (574 kW; 769 bhp), unchanged from the production car. The body has been completely redesigned, and includes redrawn front and rear fascias, a new front bumper, a rear diffuser, transparent hood vents that show off the engine, roll hoops behind the seats, taillights and wheels from the Ferrari 812 Superfast. The blue, white and yellow paint job pays homage to the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. "JC" stands for John Collins, a Scottish collector and founder of Talacrest, a classic Ferrari dealer located in the U.K. He commissioned the car in mid 2014 and it took 3.5 years to complete. Ferrari said the design process alone took 2 of those years.

2019 Ferrari SP80/C

  • Name: Ferrari SP80/C
  • Year: 2019
  • Commissioned by: @mr_tk, Hong Kong
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari 488 GT3
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: $4,5M

On 25 March 2019 Ferrari introduced the one-off P80/C. The brief for this Special project was to create a modern Sports Prototype inspired by some of the most iconic models in Ferrari’s history, such as the 330 P3/P4 and Dino 206 S of the 1960s – highly radical cars in their day, and instant icons. Development started way back in 2015.In general the Ferrari Special Projects tend to be stylistic reinterpretations of a classic or current model in Ferrari’s range. The P80/C is hoewever a pure track car with peak performance being a major factor. This not only inspired the design team in terms of styling, but also led them to select the Ferrari 488 GT3 as its basis, having a longer wheelbase (50mm) than the 488 GTB. The standard Ferrari 488 has a classic layout with its cockpit positioned in the middle of the car, as viewed from the side. The GT chassis, in contrast, allows for a more cab-forward emphasis, with an elongated rear end, lending the car a powerfully aggressive character. The P80/C’s unique design has strong and clear links to Ferrari racing classics like the 330 P3/P4, Dino 206 S and 250 LM.
A striking wedge shape dominates the view of the car’s side at the front end. The curving, muscular shapes of the wings are emphasised by ‘buttresses’ that merge into the side air intakes feeding the engine, conveying the impression that the cabin is fused as one with the body. The front end is also cleverly separated, visually speaking, from the rear section.
The tinted wraparound windscreen clearly references Ferrari’s iconic Sports Prototypes of the past, while the flying buttresses converging towards the roof seem to make the glasshouse resemble a racing driver’s helmet visor.
The P80/C is made entirely from carbon-fibre, which is left bare wherever the parts have a purely technical function.
According to a FerrariChat member, the one-off has been specially created for @mr_tk and could be delivered by Blackbird Concessionaries in Hong Kong.

  • Year: 2020
  • Commissioned by: unknown
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari 812 Superfast
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: unknown

On 25 September 2020 Ferrari unveiled the 10th one-off model crafted over a front-engined V12 platform since the 2009 P540 Superfast Aperta: the Omologata. The unique creation is based on the 812 Superfast, but the windscreen and headlights are the only bodywork elements that haven’t been changed. Finished in Rosso Magma and featuring a custom racing livery, the Ferrari Omologata adopts a new body kit. It consists of a flattened oval grille, rounded section over the front wheel arches, more muscular haunches, three horizontal transversal cuts instead of a rear screen, and deeply set single taillights. Other distinctive exterior elements include the prominent rear spoiler and huge rear diffuser. The Omologata was commissioned by an unnamed European client and the brief was to create “a futuristic design with distinctive elements reinterpreted in a fresh manner to provide potential for a timeless shape that is certain to leave a lasting impression.”

  • Commissioned by: Ferrari initiated project
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari F12berlinetta
  • Production run: 10

The open-top configuration pays homage to US-only limited production convertible Ferraris of the past, such as the 275 GTS/4 NART Spider. Compared to the F12, the F60 has all-new bodywork; it uses a light removable soft top instead of a conventional convertible top. Each of the ten examples built features an asymmetrical cabin design with red trim for the driver's area and black for the passenger, American flag detailing in the center of the backrests of both seats, and classic blue and white North American Racing Team livery.

2015 Ferrari F12berlinetta SG50 Edition

  • Name: Ferrari F12berlinetta SG50
  • Year: 2015
  • Commissioned by: Ital Auto (official Ferrari importer for Singapore)
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari F12berlinetta
  • Production run: 1
  • Price: est. $3 to $4 million

The Ferrari F12berlinetta SG50 Edition is a one-off car made to celebrate Singapore’s 50 years of independence. Though it is a one-off spinoff of the Ferrari Tailor Made program, it is merely a tailored model and not a Special Project.

Called the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta SG50, the Italian automaker is celebrating the occasion with a special model ordered from the company’s Tailor Made program by Ital Auto, the official Ferrari importer for Singapore. Sporting a red and white scheme on the outside that mirrors the colors of Singapore’s flag, the Italian automaker gave it a different shade of red than you’d typically see on a Ferrari called Rosso Singapore. Subtle Bianco Italia (white) can be found on the racing stripes, wheels, wing mirrors and aero kit including the front splitter, side skirts and rear skirts.

The inside features a blend of black leather and technical fabrics and also retains the red and white scheme while a Singaporean lion has been embroidered on the headrests. Finishing off the cabin are custom door sill plates that say “Singapore 50th Anniversary Edition 1/1.”

ICONA LIMITED EDITION SPECIAL SERIES:

 2018 Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2

  • Name: Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2
  • Year: 2018
  • Commissioned by: series production
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari 812
  • Production run: 200 (?)
  • Price: unknown

The MONZA SP1 and SP2 are retro-inspired speedsters featuring a compact windscreen and unique bodywork.
The Monza SP1 is a single seater with a removable panel where the passenger seat would normally be located.
The Monza SP2 is a two-seater featuring a slender tunnel which separates the driver from the passenger.
Both vehicles use the underpinnings of the Ferrari 812. This means a 6.5-liter V12 turning out 810 hp.
Ferrari collector David Lee says Ferrari plans to create just 200 examples. It’s unclear if he means in total or 200 of each model.
Though the “SP” in both of the car's names points to Ferrari’s Special Projects division,  all "SP's" are usually created as one-offs commissioned by individual clients. As the Monza SP1 and SP2 apparently will be produced in series they should be considered as "Ferrari Limited Series" like the Ferrari Sergio, F60 America, F12berlinetta SG50 Edition and the J50. The 18-09-2018 Ferrari press release confirmed the new 'ICONA' limited edition special series category.

 2022 Ferrari Daytona SP3

  • Name: Ferrari Daytona SP3
  • Year: 2022
  • Design by: Centro Stile Ferrari
  • Base car: Ferrari LaFerrari
  • Production run: 599
  • Price: € 2.000.000

The third Icona model is a mid-engined V12 masterpiece, inspired by Ferrari's sports prototype racers of the 1960s. It features a carbon tub, targa roof and the most powerful Ferrari V12 yet.
With its first mid-engined V12 since the hybrid LaFerrari it is a tribute to Maranello's sports car racing glories of the 1960s. Offered only to Ferrari's most loyal clients, the SP3 follows the SP1 and SP2 Monza barchettas as the third Icona model. Deliveries will begin in late 2022. The SP3 is powered by the most powerful V12 Ferrari has ever built: 829bhp, a 9500rpm rev ceiling and 514lb ft of torque.
Structurally the Daytona uses a modified version of the LaFerrari Aperta's composite monocoque, though the SP3 goes without that car's hybrid elements, saving a little weight in the process (the Daytona comes in at 1485kg dry, split 44:56 front/rear). It also uses only passive aerodynamic solutions – active flaps just wouldn't be right on a car with its heart and soul in the 1960s. Inspired by the likes of the incomparably pretty 330 P4 (the curving musculature over each wheel and the sleek central cockpit) and the brutally beautiful 512 S (the dramatic slab-sided 'pods' just ahead of the doors), the Daytona SP3 is a labour of love and a design tour de force, one that revels in the interplay of curvaceous and geometric forms.

TESTIMONIALS

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
