The Alfa Romeo SZ (Sprint Zagato) is the ultimate sporting development of Alfa Romeo's legendary Giulietta. It was based on the shorter chassis of the Giulietta Spider combined with the mechanicals of the racier Sprint Veloce and was specially prepared for competition by Zagato in direct agreement with Alfa Romeo. Franco Scaglione designed the body in Bertone's studio, while the aluminum bodywork was constructed at Zagato's workshop. The cars were quite expensive owing to the 300 hours necessary to build the bodies.

The tiny sports car used a space frame chassis, which was totally unlike the production Giulietta. Zagato also used perspex side windows and a relatively sparse interior to help reduce weight (the car weighs just 770kg). As a result the SZ was much faster than its steel-bodied production counterparts.

A few more than 200 examples were built, and they became the weapon of choice in the small bore production class. About 200 cars (217?) were built of which the last 30 examples featured a long Kamm tail called the 'Coda tronca'.

A barnfind was auctioned in Italy on 31-01-2019 for € 567.000,- (see link).

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
